BME OMIKK is not only a library, it is also an information centre dealing with creation of digital content in different fields, including publishing scientific journal, works on science history, digitization of old documents and processing current journals to help searching.

1. Lists of library network

BME OMIKK is the central public library of the University with large collection, with reading rooms in the heart of the University and service point in Lágymányos Campus, with wide spectrum of library services, with 55 service hours per week. There are several smaller libraries at the faculties and departments of the University with specialized smaller collections providing services to a smaller research staff on demand. Their acquisitions are covered from project incomes of the departments. These smaller libraries are organized into a library network of the University. The list of member libraries is published by BME OMIKK regularly.

2. Hungarian Digital Image Library

The Hungarian Digital Image Library has been developed by the National Széchényi Library in collaboration with 48 Hungarian libraries in 2008-2009. The development of the continuously expanding digital image collection was funded by the Renaissance Program Office and the Hungarian Ministry of Education and Culture.

Its aim is to provide access to well-known and less known images within and beyond country borders. The collection interest of the image library apart from the National Széchényi Library’s images comprises digital Hungarica documents descending from different collections, for instance codices, regional history picture collections, postcards, posters and other digital images (like scanned manuscripts).

4. BME Yearbooks (1872 - )

One of the important results of BME OMIKK's digitization projects is digital publishing of old yearbooks of the University. The BME Archives holds a complete series of the yearbooks published from the academic year of 1857-58 to 2000.

The processed documents can be searched by type, by year of by free text to help research. Speeches of academic year opening and other ceremonies from 1872 to 1946, educational programmes and timetables from 1857 to 1948 have already been digitized. They are available here. Digital versions of yearbooks from 2003 to 2006 are also available:

The process is co-ordinated and doctoral defences are registered by the National Doctoral Council in Hungary. For this reason, information on doctoral defences is available in the central database of the Council.

If you are interested in defences at BME, then in the search page of the Hungarian Doctoral Council you should select 'Budapest University of Technology and Economics' in the pull-down menu. Clicking on 'Search' the list of doctoral defences is given in categories selected by check-boxes:

  • future and recently accomplished defences
  • successful defences
  • unsuccessful defences
  • cancelled defences
  • further defences

Full-texts and abstracts of theses are accessible using the main catalogue (OPAC) of BME OMIKK.

Printed copies are available in the Main Reading Room after the defence.

BME OMIKK provides access to all papers in an integrated system with full text search for all papers in interdisciplinary approach within BME net.

9. Digitization of library documents

ENRICH was a project funded under eContent+ programme. The main aim of the project was to create seamless access to distributed information about manuscripts and rare old printed books in Europe on the Manuscriptorium platform.
Manuscriptorium is the digital library that - at the beginning of ENRICH - contained data of 47 partners from the Czech Republic and abroad. It is the largest digital library of manuscripts in Europe offering access to more than one million digitized pages and a lot of descriptive data.
ENRICH enhanced the Manuscriptorium content by connecting additional digital libraries and taking aboard those who had not offered digital libraries before. To achieve this goal, many existing technologies were optimized and new ones developed.
ENRICH started on 1 December 2007 and finished on 30 November 2009. During this time, it added more than five million digitized pages from direct ENRICH partner institutions and hundreds of thousands of additional pages from other associated partners to Manuscriptorium.
ENRICH stands for European Networking Resources and Information concerning Cultural Heritage.
BME OMIKK joined to ENRICH project in 2007.
