Readers Service Department

The mission of the Readers Service is to
  • provide the readers reliably, quickly and smoothly with requested documents both in the reading rooms and at the circulation service points;
  • ensure stock protection and conservation, organize and maintain order of storage;
  • keep environment of quiet and effective learning in the reading rooms.

The readers service maintains a contact point in building "I" at the Lágymányos Campus (Magyar Tudósok körútja 2., I épület,  B-023).

Services of the department

BME OMIKK is a public library not exclusively for the members of the University community and employees but for all above 16.

Access to information about the collection, that is using catalogues, is free. Electronic catalogues cover nearly 60 percent of the collection. Older publications can be found in card catalogues.

Registration for Library membership

Registration shall be done in person. Library passes with photo proves membership in the library.

For registration one must provide appropriate identification (Identity Card, Driving Licence, Passport)  and proof of address (Address Card, Residence Permit) together with rights for discount according to specific certificates (Student Card, Pensioner Card, etc.).

The user shall sign a declaration on accepting the regulations of BME OMIKK. (See under Rules & regulations)

Hungarian citizen above 18

  • Anyone in legal capacity and with Hungarian address can receive membership in the library.

Non-Hungarian citizen

  • EU citizenship or Residence/Settlement Permit of non-EU citizen

For Library Card with right for library loan

  • Hungarian Address Card or employer's certificate or letter of guarantee is needed

Students in regular (non-Erasmus, non-student exchange) training

  • Student Card issued by BME
  • Student Card issued by other institute and letter of guarantee

Legal entity of Hungarian registration

  • formal documents of company, foundation or society and
  • Letter of Guarantee from the executive officer; the membership authorizes four registered users nominated by the legal entity

Change of recorded data must be reported at the registration desk of the library to avoid extra charges related with incorrect data.
Personal data recorded in the process of registration are processed according to the Act  CXII./2011 on Information Protection.

Library passes

Users of library services can choose different types of library passes according to their planned activities.

Daily Ticket

  • valid for using printed documents in the library on the day of registration. Its holder is not authorized to receive library loan.

Visitors' Ticket

  • valid for one year. Its holder is not authorized to borrow documents.

Readers' Card

  • authorizes for full use of library services, including access to electronic documents and interlibrary loan.

BME Student Card

  • authorizes its holder to use printed documents in the library.


Library loan

To borrow documents from BME OMIKK one needs valid Readers Card. There are selected parts of the collection in the storing facilities and in the reading rooms that are ready for library loan.
Other library passes or Student Cards do not entitle their holders to borrow documents.
Library loan can be taken in person or by authorized person.
Library loan period is four weeks in general, but in case of some documents is only 2 weeks. 

Documents that are not subject of circulation

  • Periodicals, journals, newspapers;
  • Original copies of dissertations submitted at Hungarian universities;
  • Documents with historic value or historical importance;
  • Rare and non-replaceable works that are available in single copies;
  • Manuscripts;
  • Volumes that belong to reference library in the reading rooms;
  • Copies of translations;
  • Hungarian standards;
  • Books and brochures published before 1945.

 Renewal of library loan

  • Renewal can be asked at any desk ready for circulation service or at the reference service in person, via phone (+36 1 463 1790 and +36 1 463 1152) or via Skype (omikk-tko-pult).
  • Renewal can be processed through the catalogue (OPAC) using the barcode in the Readers Card and your password. To log in the first time one should repeat the barcode as a password. (To protect your privacy, the password is to be changed after receiving your Readers Card!)

Limitations of renewal

  • Maximum number of renewals is five periods;
  • The reader holds another documents overdue and the overdue balance reaches the limit;
  • The reader has unpaid charges;
  • There is a legal procedure between the library and the reader;
  • The course of the student finishes within the library loan period
  • The Readers Card expires within the library loan period
  • The document is reserved by others.

Reservation and service at Lágymányos Campus service point

  • Reservation of either borrowed documents or documents stored in the library can be submitted via the catalogue (OPAC) or with the help of Information & Reference Service.
  • The site of service can be the desk of central library loan service or the "Lágymányos" service site (Magyar Tudósok krt. 2.) according to the wish of the reader.
  • If the reserved document is available, the library sends e-mail to the reader. Reservation fee shall be paid when borrowing the document. If the reserved document is not taken, a special charge is to be paid. (See Fees & charges.)

Lost items

  • If the borrowed document is lost or seriously damaged, the reader is entitled to replace it with an identical copy or with its newer edition. In case of minor damage the cost of restoration (rebinding) is to be paid.
  • Lost documents that are not replaceable should be reported at the central desk of library loan service. The library informs the reader in an e-mail about the value of the lost item that is to be paid within one month. Delay of payment is processed and charged similarly as overdue in returning library loan.

General information

Requests for documents from local storerooms to the central circulation desk can be submitted in CallSlips. Requests submitted until twenty minutes before the end of service hours are processed.

Requests for remote storage facility are served after 3 PM in the next working day. Colleagues from the Information and Reference Department help in submitting requests.

Books stored on the shelves of reading rooms can be borrowed at the service points of the reading room. Sticker on the cover informs whether the document can be borrowed or it is excluded from circulation.

Book should be returned at the same service point. The sticker informs about the right location.

Overdue charge is to be paid if the document is not returned until the due time printed in the library loan leaf and stored in the electronic catalogue. Overdue charge is calculated per document per day basis.

Cost of processing overdue are charged to the user.

Loaning anti-theft lock for laptop

Borrowing information

  • The service is only available to our library patrons.
  • The anti-theft lock can be used at all tables of the Library.
  • Pick-up points: Central circulation desk, circulation desk of the reading rooms.
  • The anti-theft lock must be return till 19:45 (in the exams peroid 21:45) otherwise we charge an overdue fee (500 Ft/workday).
  • Lost or damaged anti-theft lock or key fee 15.000 HUF.
