Information & Reference Service Department

The reference service provides information about the collection of the library, the most important domestic and international information services and their access. Helps in finding literature in the fields of science and technology.

The mission of the reference service is

  • to help in using the system catalogues in the library
  • to inform about the collection, about the major domestic and international information services, databases and their use
  • to assist in finding literature in the field of interest
  • to answer reference requests with bibliographic and factographic information
  • to provide specific electronic information and search in literature if ordered
  • to make available PhD theses before public defending
  • to receive groups of visitors, to organize presentations, information events and demonstrations

in person, in phone, in e-mail, in brochures, in leaflets.

Training of library users

We provide information on the library and the databases to individuals and to groups on request.

Library information to the students of BME and other higher education institutes

  • On request of faculties or departments we offer demonstration and training in using literature in the specific field.

Database information events

  • We make presentations on using the databases available in the library and organize events for the representatives of information providers to show the new  developments in their services

Library visits

  • We receive groups of visitors, organize presentations, information events and demonstrations

Training in library studies

Students of other higher education institutes in library and information sciences are received to complete their professional training at BME OMIKK.

Guided tour for freshmen

In the beginning of semesters we organize guided tours of 30 to 90 minutes for groups of freshmen and their mentors in the service hours of the library.

The tour introduces the library services, mentions curiosities of library history, shows public spaces of the library.

Participants of the longer guided tour may enter some service and storage spaces, see special architectural and constructional implementations.

Training of library assistants

BME OMIKK and its predecessor institute have been providing accredited training to receive vocational qualification as library assistant since 1956.

Condition of participation: completing secondary education. (ISCED level 3)

The training period is two semesters. The training finishes with exams in theory and in practice.
