Glossary

A
Adware - advertising-supported software is any software package which automatically plays, displays, or downloads advertising material to a computer after the software is installed on it or while the application is being used.

Bandwidth – the total amount of data that can be moved through the network per unit of time. Connection speed is measured in kbps (kilobits per second) and megabits per second (mbps).

C
Client – a piece of software that accesses remote services from another piece of software called a server. Often (although not always) the client software and server software reside on two separate computers.

Content Management System (CMS) – a computer software system for organizing and facilitating collaborative creation of documents and other content. A content management system is frequently a web application used for managing websites and web content, though in many cases, content management systems require special client software for editing and constructing articles. The market for content management systems remains fragmented, with many open-source and proprietary solutions available.

 

Creative Commons - The Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization devoted to expanding the range of creative work available for others legally to build upon and share. The Creative Commons website enables copyright holders to grant some of their rights to the public while retaining others through a variety of licensing and contract schemes including dedication to the public domain or open content licensing terms. The intention is to avoid the problems current copyright laws create for the sharing of information.

FLOSS – The phrase Free/Libre/Open-Source Software, or FLOSS, (see also the similarly derived FOSS) is an inclusive term designed to be neutral when referring to both free software and open source software.Often both free software and open software can refer to the same program or source code, but each term represents a differing emphasis on the importance of freedom (free software) or technical progress (open source software).

FOSS - Free and Open Source Software, also F/OSS or FOSS, is software which is liberally licensed to grant the right of users to study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its source code. F/OSS is generally synonymous with free software and open source software, and describes the same licenses, culture, and development models.

Freeware computer software which is made available free of charge, as opposed to payware where the user is required to pay. [continue]
