The acquisition policy of the library reflects the wide spectrum of the university’s academic programmes both in terms of genres and topics.

Books and periodicals on technology and natural sciences
According to its profile, the library collects all technical literature in Hungarian. In foreign languages the selection is matched to the fields of education, research and the industry in order to fully meet the needs of these areas. The most popular items and the latest acquisitions can be found on the open shelves of the Technology and Natural Sciences Reading Room (MSZO), while copies of the Gmelin, Beilstein and Chemical Abstracts series are available for in-library use in the Community Room.

Books and periodicals on economics and social sciences

This collection comprises publications on the economic aspect of engineering and on topics related to our university’s academic programmes in economics.

Textbooks, lecture notes

These primarily include items needed for the studies of BME students. All textbooks and lecture notes published by BME and most textbooks of other universities are collected.

Handbooks, reference works

Encyclopaedias, thematic dictionaries, data collections, collections of laws and regulations are available for in-library use only. They are placed under LCC class “ÁLT” (General Works) according to the areas of science they belong to.

Language learning textbooks, dictionaries

Our library holds general, as well as specialised dictionaries in the fields of science, technology and economics. We also have a large collection of foreign-language literary fiction.

Literary fiction and popular science

Our acquisitions also include works in literary fiction.

Dissertations

Our collection comprises PhD theses in engineering and other fields defended at BME, as well as CSc and DSc dissertations in engineering, defended at the Academy of Sciences, for which a search option is available in the online database.

For further information on the public defence of doctoral dissertations please visit the website of the Hungarian Doctoral Council Dissertations are available electronically in our catalogue, while in hard copy in ground floor room 12 before and in the Main reading room after they are defended.

Standards

Our standards collection includes tens of thousands of individual standards in hard copy and several hundred collections of standards, comprising European, other foreign and international standards introduced in Hungary. Information on standards, partial or full texts of standards in digital format can be found in several of BME OMIKK’s domestic and foreign databases.
